of course there is no, it should be
'cdplay -c /dev/hdb >/dev/audio'

cat /dev/sndstat ('cat /dev/sndstat |mail sacha@ak2614.sbp.edu')
and check if you can play digital directly -- you need wav or au file, or
both:
cat file.au >/dev/audio
cat file.wav >/dev/dsp
it works?
this will test your audio and dsp devices, if you have only wav, you use
sox to convert it into au.
Anyway, your problem is very strange.
